From Cartagena airport to the Old City and Getsemaní

The airport is close to the historic centre and the ride is short. How taxis work, what to agree before you get in, and other options.

Cartagena's airport is unusually close to the city. You can be at your door in the historic centre soon after you collect your bags, as long as you know how taxis work here.

How far is the airport from the Old City?

Rafael Núñez International Airport (code CTG) is in the Crespo neighbourhood, a few kilometres north-east of the walled Old City. The drive to the Old City or Getsemaní usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Taking a taxi

A taxi is the simplest option, and what most visitors use.

  • Use the official taxi stand outside the arrivals hall rather than accepting a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal.
  • Taxis in Cartagena do not use meters. Fares are set by zone. Ask for the fare to your destination before you get in, and confirm it with the driver.
  • Carry Colombian pesos in small notes. Drivers often cannot change large notes, and most do not take cards.
  • Have the address ready on your phone, with a nearby landmark. In Getsemaní and the Old City some streets are narrow or closed to traffic at certain times, so the driver may drop you at the nearest corner.

Ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Cartagena and are a good alternative if you have mobile data on arrival. The fare is shown before you confirm, which removes the need to negotiate.

Is there a bus?

City buses run along the main avenue outside the airport, but they are awkward with luggage and not designed for visitors. For the short distance involved, a taxi or app is worth it.

Arriving late at night

Flights into Cartagena often land late. Taxis meet every arriving flight, so getting into the city is not a problem. What matters is being able to get into your accommodation: check before you travel how and until what time you can check in.

Both of our apartments have self check-in with a smart lock from 3 pm until 2 am, so a late arrival is fine. Guests receive exact arrival instructions in the guest area before they travel.

Going back to the airport

Allow extra time in the late afternoon and early evening, when traffic along the coast road is heaviest. Ask your host to recommend a driver, or book a ride in an app.
